I hope this newsletter finds you well in health and strong in spirit. In such uncertain times, I often think how lucky we are to be able to count on our friends for ongoing companionship and support. I hope you too will find the courage to pursue your dreams, whatever they may be. Lyn and I send our best wishes to you and your family.
SEATTLE NEWS
As you may know, I recently joined Gallery 110, a Seattle cooperative gallery. Located in Pioneer Square, it is in the heart of Seattle's popular gallery district.
A Special Visit
Among the many exciting visits I have had with friends this year, I was pleased to meet with George Brant at my home recently. George is the executive director and founder of Gallery 110. He and his wife Lauren drove up from Seattle and I was able to show them examples from the entire arc of my art career to date: pen & ink drawings (1975-1987), etchings (1987-1990), watercolors (predominantly 1986-1996) and acrylic paintings (1994 – present). As an artist himself, George is very knowledgeable about paint materials and methods. As a gallery owner and director of many years, he has great insight. I look forward to working with him for many years to come.
Kindertotentanz: The Etchings
I will be having two shows at Gallery 110 this year. The first will be a solo show next month — April 2009 — of the Kindertotentanz etchings. My second solo show, at the end of September, features new paintings from Ships Mountains and the Sea IV and Paintings of the Wind.
The Kindertotentanz etchings and aquatints will be shown in the Gallery 110's Loft Gallery from April 2-25.
During the same period, a joint show by three other gallery artists will be on exhibit in the main gallery. Their work explores medical themes similar to those in the Kindertotentanz etchings.
I will be in Seattle for the opening on Wednesday and Thursday, coming back Friday morning. You are invited to the opening reception with wine and appetizers on Wednesday April 1. The gallery is also open for Seattle's "First Thursday" on April 2. Please call or send an email if you think you might be able to come and we could meet for coffee or breakfast as well!
Ships Mountains and the Sea IV & Paintings of the Wind
In October, I'm planning a major exhibition of new images from Ships Mountains and the Sea IV — please see an example of this new work below — as well as from my new series Paintings of the Wind: Kite-Boarders on Nitinaht Lake — see example to the left.
I will be having a vernissage or preview opening party at Gallery 110 on Wednesday evening, September 30, 2009.
Why not save the date and plan a holiday for a night! I will be bringing 25 of my best works to Seattle for this exhibit.

American Visionary Art Museum
Four paintings from my Kindertotentanz series are currently in “Marriage of Art, Science and Philosophy” at the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM).
The AVAM is a beautiful world-class institution on the inner-harbor of Baltimore, Maryland. The exhibition opened October 2008 and runs until September 2009.
At the AVAM, I was struck by the absence of cynicism and manipulation. In my fellow self-taught artists I found conviction, intelligence and articulate craft. The result was a powerful experience described by one reviewer as:
"... an astonishing assortment, by turns whimsical, diverting, disturbed, serene, intensely focused, powerfully moving."
