August 7, 2006

Greetings to all from the Purple House in New Westminster! Much has happened since my last newsletter. Lyne and I visited Greece this Spring. I reconnected to family (my sister, Anna, and cousins from my mother's family) and old friends. Lyne sampled Greek Island living (circa 2006 A.D.) on the cycladean isles of Folegandros and Santorini. We hiked most days, starting very early to avoid the heat, and thus saw owls and beautiful sunrises. I did lots of painting in watercolor and Acrylic during the rest of the day.

Athens: Summer 2007 exhibition Watercolors and Acrylics

Alexis Philactopoulos, the Director of Dikeme - College Year in Athens has offered me a chance to exhibit my new works from Greece at the Ismene Gallery on the Platea Stadiou near the Acropolis in central Athens. The show will open in June 2007, and I will return to Greece for the opening reception. The first set of these works van be seen on my website by linking from the following images.

You are all invited to the opening. More of the paintings I did in Greece will be shown on my website over the course of the year. I attended College Year in Athens right after high school in 1974-75. I studied modern Greek language, ancient Greek history, sculpture and archeology, history of religion, and philosophy from some of the brightest and most articulate teachers I have ever had. The friends and mentors I made during that year have remained an ongoing source of joy and stimulation.

The exhibition will be a benefit for College Year in Athens, with over 50% of proceeds going to the school. Works that are planned for the show will need to be in Athens during the exhibition period, but can be reserved or purchased before then by contacting me at haughton-art@shaw.ca

Vancouver Spring 2007- Exhibition of Acrylics and Oils

Over the last three years I have been painting a number of works of all sizes of the British Columbia landscape. I am negotiating to show them in Vancouver next March and April. Paintings from the Sea and Sky series can be seen on my website and and more will be posted for my next newsletter in September/October.

On the personal side, I am no less delightedly in love with Lyne. We had a wonderful time together in Greece. We will travel with friends to Quadra Island in August. This is a spectacular setting where Vancouver Island crowds up against the Coast Mountain range near Campbell River. We will hike, fish, paint, swim, kayak, paint, bicycle, read novels, cook feasts, and enjoy each other's company.

My daughter, Geneva (12) is growing up. We just returned from a seven day father-daughter camping trip to Vancouver Island which was great fun for us both. She has begun a self-directed course in drawing and is way ahead of her dad at the same age.

Life is very good for me, as I hope it is for you too during this beautiful summer.

Yours, David
