Fear, Hope and Longing

Welcome to a curated sample of available works from three Fear, Hope & Longing exhibitions. If you are interested in viewing more of these series, and other Pacific Ocean inspired works, please see paintings from the 2013 and 2016 Fear, Hope & Longing exhibitions.

Each of the last 23 years, I have spent weeks in Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, during storm season making thousands of photos and scores of sketches and paintings. What I am painting are my emotions:

Fear – the emotion of swimming in a cold winter ocean, the thrill of being alone, helpless, tossed by powerful waves, and the foreboding anticipation of a larger, darker wave looming behind.

Hope – the pure, clear morning air and warm early light engenders anticipation and exhilaration.

Longing – Sunset and crepuscule elicit acute nostalgia – a heightened sense of one’s mortality and appreciation of the evanescence of life.
