During high school, I stumbled on a book about the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Inspired by his independent attitude, his enthusiasm for art, and his amazing drawings, I made him my artist-hero. In 1991, I moved to Vancouver. Mount Baker became a recurring sight – sometimes a faint shadow on the horizon, at others a snow enveloped mass looming above the highway – occasionally startling, beautiful always, different from each viewpoint, and in each different light.

Familiar with Hokusai’s woodblock series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, I had admired Mount Baker for years from my home studio balcony. Only in 2016 did ‘the penny drop’. I then began my series Views of Mount Baker – an homage to my Japanese mentor.
