Island Paintings III continues a series of landscape paintings of the British Columbia Coast. The series expands View from the Ferry and View from the Spit begun in Island Paintings I and Island Paintings II. It includes Bamfield (View of Deer Group Islands) and Gulf Islands with Arbutus (paintings of Gabriola, Mayne, Salt Spring and Saturna). Bamfield, on Barkley Sound, at the Northern terminus of the West Coast Trail, is a fishing village, the point where the first cross-Pacific telegraph cable reached Canada, and is the site of the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. It is also the ancestral home of the Huu-ay-aht of the Nuu-chah-nulth people – a place of thick sea mists – and many, many islands just off-shore. The Arbutus (also Madrona) tree provides a beautiful curving and dancing foreground to many an island shore view in the Gulf Islands.
