Greetings from the purple house in New Westminster! I hope you and yours are doing well. As some of you know, Lyne had a month’s sabbatical in January and I took off some time with her. From our rented apartment in Paris for two weeks, we spent a wonderful fortnight walking around the city, touring museums, eating baguettes, sampling amazing cheeses, and cooking recipes from La Regalade cookbook. We had a wonderful vacation and I even painted a few small acrylic paintings while Lyne caught up on some much-needed sleep.

I'm excited to tell you I'll be having three exhibitions of my work this spring: two simultaneous shows in Vancouver and one in Athens, Greece. I hope I'll see you at one or more!

Ships, Mountains and the Sea IV
My first exhibit this spring continues my exploration of the British Columbia landscape. Ships, Mountains, and the Sea IV will show from May 3 - 27 at Simon Patrich's new gallery space, the Gallery O – Contemporary, at the Art Center, 2060 Pine Street, Vancouver. Some fifty acrylic paintings, from very small to very large, are my best work of the last three years and a source of great pride for me. Please join us for the opening reception Thursday May 3, 6-9 pm.

Many Islands, Ucluelet, 2006, acrylic on multimedia art board, 20 x 24 inches

Fragments of the Sea
As mentioned in my last two newsletters, a series of watercolour and acrylic Greek landscapes entitled Fragments of the Sea will open June 16th in Athens, Greece. The show will benefit College Year in Athens – Dikeme, a program that I respect and to which I am very grateful. If your schedule precludes you visiting Greece this June, please visit www.haughton-art.ca/new_work/greece.htm

watercolour on Semmelier Rag (block), 2006, 4,25 x 9.66 inches

The Kindertotentanz
Another quite different and more serious exhibit of work, Kindertotentanz, will also open May 3rd at the Art Center and run concurrently with Ships, Mountains, and the Sea IV until May 17th, 2007. This is a side of me many of you may not know, and may find difficult. However, I hope you will support me in this exhibit as I feel so strongly about the subject matter.

The Kindertotentanz is a group of over 100 works done between 1984 and 2000, including etchings, aquatints, pen & ink drawings, oisl on canvas and acrylic paintings. They explore my emotions as a pediatrician faced with the sadness and suffering of very ill and dying children, particularly during my early years of paediatric training in Los Angeles. I've hesitated to show them but am now seeking exposure at several North American museums and public galleries.

For now, please mark May 3rd on your calendars and I'll hope to see you at the Vancouver shows. Feel free to invite any friends, acquaintances, or relatives who you think might be interested. And who knows, maybe Greece this year?

Yours, David Haughton
