Island Paintings are new landscapes of the British Columbia Coast. Haughton writes, “My mother’s mother came from the Greek island of Naxos. Perhaps this is why I love islands and deeply enjoy traveling the interstitial waters between them by ferry or small boat. Work on the British Columbia island paintings began over a decade ago, but I can trace their true origin back to 1975, voyaging alone for the first time, free camping on a ridge overlooking the Aegean and its many islands, experiencing the joy and wonder of the dawn. With backpack and by bicycle I have explored most of the Greek islands, and I’m working my way around those of British Columbia — Quadra Island in particular, but also Saturna, Mayne, Salt Spring, Galiano, Hornby, Denman and Read.”
