WATERCOLOURS

Artist Statement, 1993

Ephemeral Edifices I & II
Watercolors by David A. Haughton

W.A.C. Bennett Gallery, Simon Fraser University,
November 1992
Vancouver Community Arts Council Gallery 1993

For twelve years I worked exclusively in pen and ink. These drawings, mostly landscapes but occasionally portraits, were an attempt to capture the essence of what I was seeing with no redundancy, and no hesitation. During the last five years I have painted only in watercolor. At first I used the sketched lines of pen or pencil as a rough guide. Early on I abandoned that crutch and painted directly on the paper, relying on concentration to avoid mishaps.

The release of energy was tremendous: the resultant works full of passion and light. The works are painted in situ, in the landscape of the Greek islands or on a rocking old rowboat on the river Ganges. Goats nibble my brushes, sacred cows obstruct my view, the wind off the Tibetan plateau dries my paper as fast as I can wet it. Studio paintings are not the same.
